Bandages Become a Thing of the Past? Artificial Skin!

“Skin cells genetically engineered to be resistant to bacteria could reduce infections and improve chances of survival among burn victims”, said MIT’s Technology Review. After MIT have developed a biodegradable liquid which is composed of peptides that self-assemble into a gel that seals the wound and stops bleeding, bandages may be eventually replaced as treatment for wounds.

….Currently, doctors must continually wrap wounds with antibacterial bandages.
So Supp and colleagues genetically modified skin cells to produce higher levels of an antibacterial protein. In a paper published in the current issue of the Journal of Burn Care and Research, Supp showed that these skin cells, when grown in a test tube, could kill more of a specific kind of bacteria than standard skin cells….

除了可以使用[生物分解液, biodegradable liquid][lk1]包住傷口外, MIT的Technology Review報導, 基因工程改造的人工皮膚作為傷口的處理時,對於傷口細菌感染更是有效.

或許有一天, 繃帶會被永遠消失,取而代之的是 隨身攜帶型的”生物分解液”; 而在大面積燒傷時,可以使用人供皮膚更能增加病人的存活機率.
